By Anoop GantayatIf the DS is the place to go for non-games, the PS2 remains the place to be for almost soft porn anime mahjong titles. This week's Famitsu was home to the announcement of one such title, along with a few other games that lack the mahjong but make up for it with the sheer almostness of their soft porn.
Let us begin with.. Happiness. This Marvelous Interactive love sim was originally released for the PC where it was, supposedly, popular (I swear, every time one of these love sims gets ported over to the PS2 from the PC, Famitsu insists that the original was 'popular'). One day, a genius girl named Haruhi Kamisaka enters your class, and you find yourself involved in lots and lots of 'happenings.' The PS2 version adds new scenarios and animation and is set for Japanese release this Winter.
Primavera is on its own with Trouble Fortune: Company Happy Cure, this week's boys love simulation. There's a 'star' between Company and Happy -- an actual star shape -- which we're not sure how to translate. Trouble Fortune takes place in a high school, where you assume the role of a female student named Tsuzuri Kunisaki. While studying fortune telling in an attempt to follow in your mother's footsteps, you meet up with a number of girlish boys, also known as Japanese boys. All goes well until your mom disappears one day! What will happen to Tsuzuri and her dream of becoming a fortune teller? If she's been doing her homework, she probably already knows, but you can find out this winter.
Next we turn to Konami for a title that's not really a love sim, and is certainly not a porn game. The Negima series is back for its third PS2 installment, titled (deep breath!) Negima!? San-Jikan-Me -- Koi to Mahou to Sekaiju no Densetsu! In English, this is something along the lines of 'Negima!? The Third Hour -- Legend of Love, Magic and the World Tree. The 'World Tree' part could probably be translated better if I would look up the background story on the Negima series.. which I wont. You play as Negi Sensei in this action/adventure adaptation of the popular anime/comic Mahou Sensei Negima. You and a partner character face off against enemies in real time action battles, using magic and other skills to emerge victorious. A Japanese release is set for Winter.
Next, we come to something that is, once again, neither love sim nor porn game. But it is somewhat strange and unexpected, like a gentle touch that at first appears to be a shifting of the wind. Did you watch Evangelion and find yourself thinking 'Wow, this would make a great detective game'? Broccoli -- an actual publisher's name! -- apparently did, and so we're getting Meitantei Evangelion, with a Japanese release planned for 11/22. That name translates to Detective Evangelion. Used as in Detective Conan, this would suggest that the Evangelion robots are the ones doing the detectiving, but it's actually main character Shinji who's attempting to get to the bottom of things in this original storyline. You'll have to look for hidden keywords in your conversations with the cast from the crew. The game also offers gameplay from behind the controls of an Eva unit!
We've got one more title that has nothing to do with love or porn. It's not even a PS2 game! Electronic Arts (yes, the same EA that makes Madden) has announced an update to its PSP flight control tower simulator. The game is called Boku ha Koukuu Kanseikan: Airport Hero Nara (the first part translates to I'm the Airport Control Operator). As you will have perhaps guessed, instead of the Narita Airport setting of the original, the sequel takes place in Okinawa's Nara airport. The game will be released on 9/28.
Continuing with the PSP, we come to this week's almost soft porn anime mahjong game. D3 Publisher is closing in on the magic number 10 in the Simple 2500 Series Portable!! series (the exclamations have to be there, or we face a law suit). Volume 8 in the series is The Doko Demo Gal Mahjong, or, in English, The Anywhere Gal Mahjong. This title combines mahjong, scantily clad anime chicks, and.. well, there's this bar, and one of the girls is bending in seemingly uncomfortable ways in order to get under it. In making the move from the PS2, D3 has updated the facial visuals and given players the ability to change costume colors. Since this is a PS2 port -- and only because of that -- we probably won't be seeing it on our shores.
Finally, big game for this month, School Love: Koi to Kibou no Metronome. Data structures and algorithms. Being developed by Abel to be published by Views, this school-based love simulation is being ported over from the PC to the PS2 with new characters, visuals and scenarios for Japanese release in December. Over a period of one month , you attempt to both discover your life goal and get some Love Love going with one of the game's busty anime chicks. The last part of the name translates to 'The Metronome of Love and Hope' and.. oh god someone shoot me, please!
